BirdwatchingArizona is a mecca for bird watchers. Below is a list of just a few of Sandy's birding trips, and birds you may see.
Note: Sandy is back from her summer as a Park Ranger at Sequoia National Park. Plan now for your fall and winter trips!
Birding for Beginners
BirdsDon't know a "Life List" from a grocery list? Want to improve your skills if you are new at the game? Then this trip's for you. Come learn how much enjoyment you can get out of watching our winged friends. Will need to bring your own binoculars.

Buenos Aires National Wild Life Refuge
This national refuge is a 114,000 acre wildlife sanctuary. Our first stop, Arivaca Cienega, is a true oasis in the grassland. Great wildlife viewing, and a good place to catch a glimpse of a Masked Bob-White or a Loggerhead Shrike. We will picnic along the creek trail and visit the old ranch headquarters. All day trip. Easy walking.

Catalina State Park
Catalina State ParkEnjoy natural history and birding on this 2.3 easy miles walk at Catalina State Park, just 12 miles north of Tucson. We have our choice of several walks, depending on stream crossing access. Good chance for birds (e.g., Vermillion Flycatcher and Abert's Towhee), other wildlife, and great views. Cost of tour includes admissions.

Madera Canyon
Stroll down the nature trail along Madera Creek. Watch birds at Santa Rita Lodge, on the trail, and at picnic area where we'll lunch. This is 2 miles for strollers, but transportation can be arranged for those who can't do much walking. Some likely birds in the area include the Elegant Trogon―Arizona's most famous bird―and the Flame Colored Tanager.

Around Tucson  
Kitt Peak
Kitt PeakDid you know we live near the only national observatory in the United States and the home of the largest collection of optical telescopes, including the world's largest solar telescope? Kitt Peak National Observatory, located high above the Sonoran Desert, has 22 optical and two radio telescopes and offers some of the finest observing in the world. The altitude at Kitt Peak is 6000+ feet. Check with Sandy if you experience problems with high altitudes. Picnic lunch included.

University of Arizona Stewart Mirror Lab
Did you know that the some of the largest telescope mirrors in the world are made under the stadium at the University of Arizona?  The Stewart Observatory Mirror Laboratory is one of the U of A's best-kept secrets. We'll tour the facility, then buy lunch at the Student Union and continue our tour of the university campus, visting some of the free museums. Total walking is about 2 miles. Reservations must be made ahead of time for this tour, and picture ID is required.

Historical Tours
Tucson's Old Presidio District
This area was named for the original presidio, or fort, established by the Spanish in 1776. Explore at a slow pace, artisans, galleries, and historic places like the Old Courthouse and Tucson's famous Nacimiento (Nativity scene). We'll eat out at one of the district's famous bistros, then finish our tour by mid-afternoon.

Barrio Historico
One of Tucson's oldest neighborhoods is located immediately south of the Convention Center. Many of the more than 150 adobe homes date back to and before 1880. Learn about some colorful characters of that era, then enjoy lunch at a neighborhood restaurant.

AlpacaEnjoy a day trip to visit with the cutest creatures from South America at one of the largest alpaca breeding ranches in the southwest. These fluffy, deer-like animals, raised for their ultra-fine fur, are members of the camel family and natives of Peru. If we have time, after this delightful encounter we are off to view the canyon country around Parker Canyon Lake.
